On Fri. March 23, the Varsity Flag Football team faced the J.P. Taravella Trojans in their third game of the season. With a record of 1 and 1, Varsity hoped to gain a win after their loss to North Broward Preparatory School.
“We were all kind of bummed out when we lost versus North Broward, we used that anger to beat Taravella and we did just that,” Defenseman Arielle Silcox (5) said.
The beginning of the game started off slowly, there were many interceptions made by both teams as well as a scoreless board. About half way through the first quarter, Samantha Ball (4) darted deep into the end zone and received the ball. Varsity was unable to convert the extra point making the score 6-0.
“It felt awesome scoring the first touchdown of the game. It was also my first touchdown of the season and I knew it got our team hyped and ready to start scoring more,” Ball said.
At the start of the second half, Varsity had possession of the ball. Back and fourth sets of downs continued for six minutes longer. Varsity was third and four from a first down but a hook and ladder play pursued by quarterback, Jennifer Duva, offenseman Samantha Ball (4) and offenseman Madyson Guterman (2) allowed Varsity to gain a first down.
The next play offenseman Krystal Phillips (8) hauled to the middle of the endzone and caught the ball for the touchdown and converted the extra point making the score 13-0.
“It felt great knowing that I was helping the team win the game,” Phillips said.
With about one minutes in left in the game, the Trojans called a timeout to regroup. In the last play of the game, the Trojans attempted to score a touchdown but failed in doing so when the ball was not received. The Varsity teams record changed to 2 and 1.
